I hope everyone who reads this blog knows what it feels like to cook your first meal with a kitchen full of brand new appliances. If you do, then you might also know what it feels like to cook with an appliance that just recently got repaired. In North Vancouver, BC, where I was visiting my aunt this summer I got to experience cooking with an appliance just after it got repaired by a professional technician and I must say it was just as good as cooking with a brand new appliances. Let me explain why.
First of all, both situations have their own unique form of satisfaction. When you’re cooking with a brand new appliances you get experience how that appliance works for the first time. For instance, you might have installed a gas stove in your kitchen island and cooking a stew on your new gas stove for the first time might be a fascinating experience because it feels like you’re cooking in someone else’s kitchen. This is a great joy of home cooking I hope everyone who loves to cook gets to experience.
On the other hand, cooking with an appliance that was recently broken has a different satisfaction. Although I think this satisfaction is just as pleasant as the first. The satisfaction you get from working with a newly repaired appliance is increased the longer you had to wait to get the appliance repaired. Maybe your local appliance repair company, like the one my aunt chose in North Vancouver, won’t be able to come out to fix your oven for a week. In this case, you might be sick of ordering food to your door and can’t wait to cook your own meals again. So by the time your appliance is repaired you’re so happy to cook with it again because you missed it so much.
These two different forms of satisfaction, at least for me, are equal in terms of pleasantness. But if we’re talking about purchasing a used appliance I think it would be more satisfying to purchase a brand new one instead because you haven’t had enough time to get attached emotionally to the used appliance yet. I once purchased a used microwave and immediately wished I had bought a new one instead because it didn’t heat up the food as well as I thought it ought to.
This was my opinion on the matter, and for those of you thinking of whether or not to replace your broken appliance or get it fixed I hope I helped to make your decision easier.
